What is timber seasoning?

Timber seasoning is a controlled process during which timber is allowed to dry out prior to being used in construction. Avoiding the use of moist wood in construction projects is very important for a number of reasons, making this process key to the quality of timber builds of all types. By reducing the water content of wood by around 15 percent through the removal of bound water, as well as the free water found in the various crevices of the wood, a whole host of benefits prevail.

What is the difference between seasoned and unseasoned timber?

Timber seasoning is important and beneficial to the timber industry and for use on construction projects for a number of reasons:

– Reducing the moisture in the timber used in construction projects allows for a higher quality of finish on the constructions.

– Constructions using seasoned timber are much more durable and reliable, with much higher longevity than those constructed from timber with high moisture levels.

– The safety of constructions using seasoned timber is higher and more reliable thanks to their sturdier, withstanding properties.

How does the process work?

1. The process of timber seasoning is one that can take place either out in the air, or within special wood-drying kilns; a particularly effective solution which provide the timber with the optimum levels of heat and air flow required for the drying process – both of which are crucial factors.

2. For both of these processes, the timber has to be cut down to size before being stacked within these structures or out in the open to ensure the flow of air around each board.

3. Depending on the environment in which you are carrying out the timber seasoning, the process can take different lengths of time. In the outdoors, the drying process can take between 6 and 9 months to reduce the moisture content to just 25 percent, whereas this amount can be achieved within a kiln in a much shorter period of between 2 days and a week.

What are the different types of seasoning?

Timber seasoning can be broadly classified into two main types: air seasoning and kiln seasoning. Each method has its specific processes and advantages:

Air Seasoning

This traditional method involves stacking timber in a way that allows air to circulate around each piece. The process is entirely natural and can take several months to several years, depending on the wood’s thickness and the local climate.

Kiln Seasoning

Kiln seasoning accelerates the drying process by placing timber in a controlled environment where temperature, humidity and air circulation are carefully managed. This method can significantly reduce the seasoning time from years to just weeks or days.

What are the benefits of timber seasoning?

The seasoning of timber offers various advantages, making it an essential step in wood processing for construction, furniture making and other applications.

– Enhanced durability and strength

Properly seasoned timber is more resistant to decay, fungi and insect attacks, thereby extending its lifespan and maintaining its structural integrity.

– Reduced tendency to warp and shrink

Seasoned wood has a stabilised moisture content, which minimises the risks of warping, shrinking or expanding post-installation.

– Improved workability

Seasoned timber is easier to cut, shape and finish. It also holds nails, screws and adhesives better, contributing to higher-quality construction and wood products.

– Enhanced aesthetic appeal

Seasoning brings out the natural beauty of the wood to enhance its grain patterns.
